RE100

Overview

RE100 is an international campaign aimed at replacing 100% of the electricity used by businesses with renewable energy sources (such as solar, wind, bioenergy, and geothermal) by 2050. The campaign began in 2014, led by 'The Climate Group,' a multinational non-profit organization based in the UK, and the 'Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).' It is being carried out through voluntary participation of global corporations rather than government or international organization.

As of 2023, approximately 400 companies worldwide are participating in RE100. This initiative includes prominent companies such as Google, Lego, Apple, Meta, etc. Korean companies also began joining from 2020, and around 30 companies have completed their membership.

Concept

Domestic electricity consumers use renewable energy electricity and receive a "renewable energy use certificate" to be used for RE100 implementation, marketing, etc.

Participation procedure

The company officially registers with the CDP as an RE100 declaring company and submits its annual renewable energy usage performance to the CDP for external disclosure.

Approaches for Implementing RE100

Overview

Electricity consumers invest a certain stake in renewable energy power generation projects and separately enter into third-party PPAs or REC contracts with the power generators.

Utilization

Electricity consumers purchase RECs and submit the purchased RECs to the RE100 management system and use the issued "Renewable Energy Use Certificate" to implement RE100 and GHG reduction.
