LCI DB

LCI DB

The National LCI DB, developed according to the ISO 14044 procedures, is systematically managed and operated to facilitate   users in calculating the environmental impact of products more conveniently

Its purpose is to list the quantities of inputs and outputs involved in the product system from raw material extraction, production, transportation/distribution, use, to disposal

The LCI DB consists of lists of energy and mineral resources collected from the environment, as well as emissions to the   environment such as air emissions, water emissions, and waste

Energy and mineral resources in the LCI DB are used to calculate environmental impacts such as resource depletion. Air emissions are used to calculate environmental impacts such as carbon footprint, ozone depletion, acidification, and photochemical smog. Water emissions are used to calculate environmental impacts such as eutrophication and water footprint.

Development and Certification process

The guidelines and certification process for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are carried out by proposers, applicants,   and the Korea   Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI)

① Product proposal
The EPD guidelines are established by companies wishing to obtain EPD certification, outlining a series of rules or requirements necessary for compiling product information. Companies seeking EPD product certification propose these guidelines as needed.

② Instruction
Proposed guidelines are reviewed and revised through a selection committee.

③ Application
Companies wishing to obtain EPD product certification submit an application using forms such as the application form/report.

④ Screening

Documentary, on-site, and comprehensive assessments are conducted for the products under application.

 Committee

A review committee is convened to discuss the results of the assessments conducted.

⑥ Approval
Upon approval by the review committee, the use of EPDs for certified environmentally-friendly products is authorized, and companies can proceed with submitting an EPD plan for use.

LCI DB Development process

The guidelines and certification process for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are carried out by proposers, applicants,   and the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI).

① Selection
For the establishment of the Life Cycle Inventory Database (LCI DB), participating companies are selected based on a cumulative market share of 50% or more.

② Decision
Process flowcharts of the selected companies are determined, after verifying whether the selected companies which can adequately represent the industry.

③ Collection
Guidelines for generating process data are provided, and data from participating companies are collected for internal validation.

④ Calculation
Calculations are performed based on the data verified by internal experts.

⑤ Production
The gate-to-gate inventory lists produced by each company are verified by external experts.

⑥ Establish
The upper and lower flow databases using EPD-specific LCA software are connected and reviewed.
