Life Cycle Assessment

 Overview

Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) is a quantitative evaluation of the environmental impacts through every phase of its life – from production to waste (or recycling, etc.)It involves the quantitative analysis and evaluation of environmental impacts across all stages, from raw material extraction to manufacturing, distribution, use, and disposal of the product or service.

Environmental Product Declaration(EPD) is a system based on Life-Cycle Assessment(LCA) with the following characteristics:

  • It requires the result of LCA for the entire life cycle of the product and environmental information of it
  • EPD certification is a voluntary certification system based on the voluntary participation of companies, rather than a mandatory legal certification system
  • Products certified with EPD voluntarily disclose environmental information, making them products with excellent environmental credibility

To utilize Life-Cycle Inventory(LCI) data as a basis for conducting life cycle assessments, the country operates an LCI database. The LCI database serves as essential data required for assessing the environmental performance of products. The Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI) is developing the LCI database in accordance with the procedures outlined in ISO 14044.
